As I am working on a project I asked slate about the telematics if it was replacing the obd-II and all that.

"The Slate comes standard with an OBD port, so you'll be able to connect compatible diagnostic tools just like you would with many other vehicles.
As for the optional telematics module, it would be capable of running the HVAC while you're away from the car, remote unlock and lock, and more. We'll share more information about what it can do and how it integrates with the vehicle as we get closer to production."

Slate Auto Pickup Truck Slate will have OBD II port (confirmed) 3003

So the telematics module seems to be important for remote security and if you have pets and just a guess probably remote start as well.

The telematics is only required for remote control from your phone, it will still unlock and remote start with the fob at close range.
Ah I see interesting well I guess i dont need ot for the project but might still get it for personal use

Using an OBDII port connector is not a surprise since nearly every ICEV car sold anywhere in the world has an OBDII connector, the connector must be cheaper than dirt.

To me, the telematics is the perfect "do it later" thing. First get the vehicle and get comfortable. Maybe that's enough. Later, I can blow some dough and have some fun with it if I want (and I probably will, since I like to tinker.) That's in spirit with the Slate ethos too.

It is required by federal law for Ice vehicles and in 2026 California mandated it for BEVs also

Only for ICE vehicles AFAIK. Teslas don't have one.
You are correct, I had to go back and specify EVs, thanks for the clarification. Most manufacturers still use them in their BEVs, and It is now required in California starting in 2026 for BEVs

Tesla doing Tesla things.
Eh, it's just standard Ethernet once you get past the connectors (and it's even a sub$20 cable on Amazon), then you're a click or two away from launching Toolbox on the car's network. Tesla's service access and capabilities are honestly impressive and are the only thing I give them. What other vehicles can you pop open live diagnostics and 3D visualizations of running systems in your vehicle from the touchscreen? Service Mode and Service Mode+ are kinda useful as hell.

Correct. OBDII is a diagnostics system for emissions control systems for ICEV and has been Federally mandated as the standardized diagnostics system of ICEV since the 1996 model year. The standardization was basically driven by the California Air Resources Board (known as OBDI), where the Feds mandated standardization across all manufacturers (OBDII).

Since the OBDII trapezoid-shaped connector is so widely used within the automotive industry, it makes sense to just carry it over to EV for diagnostics purposes.

All 2027 light vehicles sold in the US will replace OBD2 with OBDonUDS (SAE J1979-2). It’s optional for 2026 models and the new Toyobaru BEVs have it.

The new Slate is being released as a 2027 vehicle. Which means it will have the new protocol. I wonder if my current diagnostic tool will work?
