Um…no they were driven from the market by the Big Three cause they wanted to only provide options that provide them much larger margins. Henry Ford wanted cars for all Americans. CEO’s and Board Members want houses on at least 3 continents.

The average price of a vehicle in the US is $50k. Henry Ford built cars that Walmart Greeters could afford and how many can afford a Dodge RAM, F150, or Silverado even if it is the base model? Let’s see 0 take away 0 is um 0!

Slate is putting out a basic PU that will meet the needs of average consumers who need to pick up bags of mulch, sheets of plywood, load crap up for the beach, etc… Big Three don’t really give a 💩 about those consumers or Greeters at Walmart.

Extinct? Yeah, driven to extinction by corporate greed.

Ford has negotiating power with established vendors and can always get to a final product cheaper, which means they can also offer a lot more for less than Slate can. That said, the cleverness of this company, how they hid their product, and have done things to "leak" info here and there, I do wonder if this will be the extended range price. Could be wishful thinking. We'll see.
They have always said when they go into production they'll have only one SKU, which suggests only one battery pack. How do you adjust the line for two batteries on one SKU, and how do you manage inventory on one SKU with two options? My background doesn't support that making sense.
This is probably just wishful thinking.

Highly doubt the extended range battery is going to cost $1K+ more.

Probably $4K more based on other EV manufacturer pricing.....

And don't get me started with $10K for Extended range battery option on the Ford Lightning which I passed on in 2022.

Interestingly, if you sort that chart based on battery size,, then Ford's price really stands out as a bad deal...

Actually the “one SKU” phrase was just recently dropped by the new CEO Peter Faricey in the article reported by the Detroit Free Press. This is the same report where it was published that the blank Slate will have LFP batteries. And my logic tells me that the blank Slate in its most basic form has zero options, meaning it’s the standard range version.

All of this, combined with the price leak on Slate’s FAQ page, reminds me of the old phrase “accidentally on purpose.” 🙂

Think we are waiting for Slate U

I may have missed it, but I have not yet seen Slate issue a video regarding the process of installing the SUV kit. All I think any of has seen is the SUV transformation at the reveal when one of the Trucks was taken behind opaqued curtains and converted to the SUV in about a 3/4 hour by a crew of 4 to 6 Slate staff.

I think there is a difference between a bolt-on top as a body panel to convert a vehicle from one type to another vs. a bolt-on top designed to be easily removable. With a proper hoist like I have for removing the top of my Bronco, it is a 20-minute, 1-man job. I think if people are buying the SUV kit thinking they can easily and quickly convert back to the pickup version, the kit is going to prove different.

Assuming the price leak is accurate, I think it’s admirable that they’ve stayed true to their mid 20’s estimate. A dollar doesn’t buy what it did a year ago so they must have done some creative work to keep it there. Hoping that some griping on a forum six days before the official announcement will cause them to adjust pricing is wishful thinking. Doesn’t hurt to wish I suppose.

Oh BS. The legacy manufacturers make full-size and mid-sized pickup trucks in several configurations. Ford makes two different pickup truck platforms small and mid-sized to cater to Harry Homeowner. Toyota and Nissan have extended-cab 2-doors with 6-foot beds for under $35K.

Just checked on F-150 inventory. I can right now go to my local Ford dealer and buy a white, single-cab, 8' bed, 4x2 F-150 XL for $39,499. Inexpensive, basic truck.

Hopefully Bestop comes up with a soft top for the Slate at some point soon in 2027.
