You are correct, Sir.
In fact that is how I bought
my 21 Nacho Gladiator in 2023.

It was in Manheim PA
and I am in East Texas.
Guess I'm not that motivated after all.
East Texas is a big ol' place, as I remember (I used to live in DFW and drove across I20 to ATL regularly). So, shipping is a necessity for all kinds of things.

Just out of curiosity I looked at what transport would cost to California, about $1600 for open transport. But I'm going to drive my current car until the transmission dies or similar, or I get a Slate or figure out I won't be getting a Slate

I just checked and it is still available
for that price.
Nice. I was half considering it, too. Would be a gem for a new driver, but I just don't trust all of the locals in huge vehicles not to squash it in their haste.

Upon further reflection
the Fiat 500e was discontinued for 2026
and replaced with the hybrid Abbrida.

The unit above is two years old and used,
but still very attractively priced.

I happened to look it up on Consumer Reports. Yikes, they scored it a 40. Stepping quietly away from the table.

They say when you age you cage.
That's true for me.
Rode about 100,000 miles on two wheels,
67,000 of them on a Yamaha V-Max,
and owned a number of motorcycles.
Put my kickstand down for good
when I turned 67 and switched to Jeeps.
Figured I had stretched my luck far enough.

Just my point being even minute, the e500 is far more safe transportation. If I was concerned about crash performance, it would be difficult to choose any vehicle. I live from a crash avoidance perspective, regardless of the tire count on the road.

God bless you. I'm always envious of riders....seems like great fun.

I wish I didn't live amongst the gigantic-vehicles-waiting-to-squash-lesser-vehicles. My 20 year old daughter was in a terrible wreck in her VW Bug on her 16th birthday (8 hours after getting her license!). It wasn't built for 2 collisions.

Alas, since I do, and so my wife won't let me ride, I choose vehicles strategically (F450 probably would be safest but the MPG is tough).

I'm hoping the Slate will be something between Fiat and F450 in safety.

For whatever it's worth its has 4-Star crash rating. It lost points on the rear seats which are too small to be useful anyways. See below crash test video. It was done in Europe and its in German.

Against another Fiat, it does great! Against an Expedition….I’m skeptical.

If you see the frontal and side crash they do it against something that looks heavy and solid. The concern would be a lifted vehicle where the bumper will seat higher. But again any sedan or smaller SUV would have the same concern especially on a side impact. I hear you on your concerns especially with your daughters experience. But in some cases is not more dangerous than a corolla or equivalent and definitely better than a motorcycle or golf cart.

Always wanted a Vmax. Very VERY familiar with Viragos. I put about 100k on a ridiculously modified 96 Magna; 52k of that was in one year! (I lived in CA at the time, but the other 50k was mostly in Il and WI, year round- so yes, ice and snow.) Reading your blog had me smiling. Thanks for that. :)
