Adding 5k to the cost of the base model puts it squarely in Leaf, Bolt, EV4 and mystery Ford EV territory. Love the idea of a basic vehicle but I see the competition putting the squeeze on Slate with the suv option.

Ability to convert to an SUV at any time in the future helps.

I looked at the Leer site, and they sell similar size shells with windows and insulation for about $2,000 to $2,500. They will probably make one that fits the Slate when they start making the Slate. They make shells for just about everything else. Our 1997 F150 with a Leer shell doesn't leak and is sturdy fiberglass with windows. Almost 30 years old!

I didn't find many pictures of the Slate cargo top, but it looks like they don't have the big sunroof like the SUV does. Some of the pictures I saw looked like they might have had side windows that were wrapped (or maybe it was just a prototype). Someone said the rear doors were "barn doors", two doors like a van rather than a tailgate. I haven't seen a picture of the back.

Yes. Tesla calls it “dog mode” 🙂

I'm thinking he doesn't know the metric system based on the look on his face...

Yes the more I see the price of this thing go up the more towards the maverick I am leaning I am going to hold off on pulling the trigger on the maverick until the final price comes out the slate is a lot of nothing for to much money

Keep in mind even the hybrid maverick is purely gas powered, not a plug in hybrid.

I’ve had a number of Leer tops over the years. Currently one on my Tundra. Really hoping Slate offers the SuV top at a compatible price otherwise I’ll just own another Leer. Telling me buy our $5k top and just remove the seat isn’t a proper answer.

It does occasionally go pure ev during coasting to a stop, idling, low speed driving, and going in reverse. Wish it was a plug in though.

Leer Quad fold cover for the maverick is excellent.

It will be interesting if Leer offers a top how they will execute it. Most Leer pickup bed tops attach to the bed leaving the cab wall and rear glass in place. Slate's top moves the rear section of the cab shell including the glass to the rear of their top, and the cab wall partition is removed for the SUV transition. I think what you are suggesting is Leer's standard application of a top over the pickup bed that would keep the Slate's original cab configuration (i.e. the rear shell and cab wall stay in place)? I'm not sure how that works with a unibody pickup design.

I have to wonder if Slate wants to protect its topper solution will it pull the "patent card" to prevent other topper manufacturers from designing their tops to accept the Slate's cab rear shell.

This is the thing that concerns me the most with Slate. Will they support aftermarket accessories, or will they try to lock you in to their accessories. They claim it's going to be open, and they'll be posting models and all that, but we're less than a year out from supposed delivery, and I have yet to see the aftermarket announce any Slate accessories.

Agree. With the Gen 6 Bronco, Ford, up front, shared engineering design data with aftermarket companies to develop an aftermarket of 3rd-party Ford-approved products so owners could modify their rigs as they desired (no different than Jeep). Ford indicated at the Bronco launch in April 2020 it intended to work with the off-road aftermarket to develop a deep catalog of aftermarket parts and accessories.

Yeah, Ford wanted to release the Bronco with a whole jeep-style variety of aftermarket accessories ready to add to it. They held events for manufacturers to pull measurements from a pre-pro model so they could develop products before the truck was released. I was working at a company that was developing a big brake kit for it at the time.
Slate better be getting on that soon.

Being a very small company, I would think Slate wants to keep as much revenue for itself as possible and keep sales of the big-ticket items like the SUV conversion and tradesman conversions to itself. I think it is fair to say Slate will use industry OEMs to make the parts but not let the OEMs sell the parts in the aftermarket (to compete with Slate).

3D printing of trinkets like Slatelets and blinker light covers will not huge revenue generators.
