Phone or Tablet as your interface device?

I have something very similar for an older car that isn't head unit friendly. Honestly, it's pretty solid! Reliably connects to my phone for Android Auto, map use, and does a decent job of sending the bluetooth audio downstream to the amp.
Like @P. Regent mentioned , mine has a dashcam on the back, which was the other reason I took a chance on it.

It will be my backup plan if I cannot reasonably get a head unit into the Slate (which is looking increasinly the case). Here's to hoping the sightlines aren't too negatively affected.

I really don't trust battery devices to not overheat, something I deal with on my phone all the time.

I’ll use my phone occasionally but the biggest appeal for the truck for me is no screens. I’m sick and tired of screens in cars.

I wish it had an analog gauge cluster but this is as close as I can get.

I was thinking if I got one that has a back-up cam that I would install it as a front bumper cam instead.

Doesn't look like it, but I think they sell things that hang from the headrest posts and give you back pockets.

I plan on getting the t-rail in the back and some cleats for it off of Amazon. Then I can hang all kinds of bags of stuff back there.

It might be, I couldn't tell if that was a pocket or the way the fabric is layered under itself. I had a car with a seatback like that which didn't have a pocket. But that was the only video I could find that had a decent shot like that of the seat. If anyone can find a better one there might be an better closeup.

I may go this route as well. I currently have one in my car but find it to sometimes be a nuisance and use my phone instead. I will probably start with just my phone and see where we go from there.

Someone should integrate a screen into a cubby door, while giving enough room for the cubby door to still operate.

USAA dings me if I touch my phone while driving. If it is operated through CarPlay then it is fine. Also, the icons are small and it would be difficult to find and select icons. With CarPlay only CarPlay enabled apps show and the icons are much bigger making it easy to operate without putting my reading glasses on.

You have a good point.

Maybe get a tablet with cellular?

I know with Tesla you have to pay monthly for cellular access.

It may be around the same price for a Tablet with cellular access. If not it can't be much more.

I will not be using a phone, tablet or screen of any kind.
This truck/SUV is for local trips to places I go all the time and I already know where I am going and can use ear buds for music IF I have to.

As for phone calls and test messages? they can wait until I get to where I am going as most trips are under 20 minutes.

Here is the seat back in my Equinox

I did a chat with a Slate rep and she said that she was sure it would but has no official information. I sent her that picture from the screenshot you had and she said it very much looks like one and the ones they were showing in the presentation are very close to what you will see in production. I take that as the ones on display and not the ones on the test drives.

I will definitely start off wth a phone until I figure out if I’ll still have access to the cubby behind it. Also, I want to figure out if the pad will fit in the cubby or the center console.
