It seems that 1 in 3 reviews point to the TWO things I like best about this truck as a reason that it will fail - Manual Crank Windows and Only 2 Doors.

They grossly underestimate the popularity of something that omits these.

I find the X vs. Y discussions exasperating and stay away from Reddit.
- "Facts" are often wrong or totally absent
- A lot of effort is spent arguing definitions. For example, "Slate is not a real truck", as if a single absolute true definition of a "real" truck exists. These folks are really arguing that Slate doesn't satisfy their particular idiosyncratic use case therefore it can't possibly satisfy yours. You might as well be arguing which shade of blue is the only real blue.
- A lot of folks seem to think that they're marketing oracles able to discern what will or will not be successful in the marketplace. Those of us that think Slate will be successful have put our pre-orders in. Those that don't ... go buy something else. That's actual consumer behavior - no prognosticating required.

Basically, it’s a small, 2 door, EV, truck. Suits my needs and I don’t care what others might think or not think. Some of them just envious I’m sure.

The Slate is exactly what I looking for for my needs as work commuter and light cargo hauler.

I have a used 2024 Toyota Rav4 for commuting to and from from work, hauling the family around and doing light cargo hauling. But we need a 2nd vehicle and I was getting tired of spending around $3000 a year on gas for my 80 miles a day commute. But until now EVs were too expensive on both upfront costs and subscriptions to make them cheaper to commute with than a ICE car.

The Slate is very affordable upfront, is not requiring a subscription to operate. I can easily commute to and from work and also have a truck bed for the occasional cargo hauls. The estimates show that I be saving over $2000 a year charging my Slate instead of fueling up my Rav4. For now I still have the Rav4 as my wife's vehicle and family hauler, But in the future I may buy her a Slate SUV to save even more money and keep the Rav4 as a backup vehicle.

With my older Jeep, the estimates for maintenance, fuel and parts more than pays for 2/3 of the slate for the next 5 years. Insurance is probably going to be a wash. Won’t know until they give us rates.

Try not to be concerned with what everyone else will think on this truck. Either it will be too small, or limited on range, or only 2 wheel drive, or too sparse, etc. The goal is for you to enjoy the truck and make it yours.

Any Fathom lunkheads who are already bragging that the "under $30,000" Fathom will exceed the Slate's range are going to be rudely disappointed.

Still in camouflage, of course. But a lower greenhouse, decapitated windows, and sloping front end that Ford keeps disguising as taller than it will be so as not to scare off "real" truck buyers who made fun of the Honda Ridgeline Gen2 original front end, is not likely enough aero trickery to overcome the battery size in the base Fathom.
See the author's estimated battery size based on Ford comments below in the screenshot.
I guarantee you to get a bigger battery Ford will also make you buy some additional expensive feature (AWD) or a "luxury" tier package. And that 300 mile range truck will be no less than $40K.

The dead giveaway of overall lack of traditional "truckiness" is that Ford execs have been quoted in multiple articles as referring to the Fathom as a "lifestyle" vehicle. Never a good sign for true truck utility.

When I saw those Las Vegas images all I could think was - "those poor engineers that had their test properties commandeered by the marketing flaks for a sad, staged, PR event".
It's like they're trying to copy the Slate guerrilla reveal but they don't have the confidence in their design to take the camo off.
