Just look at the quality of the frame welds using the laser welding robots! The 3D laser scanner below locates parts down to 1 micron precision, which is the decimal equivalent of 0.000001 meters.

I thought that is a laser coordinate measuring machine to check the final dimensions of formed-up chassis. Would have loved to have that technology when I was spec'ing out CMMs back in the day when I was the equipment planning engineer for Lockheed's metrology lab in B'more. We had one that used nitrogen bearings with a ruby-tipped measuring arm (and that was considered old tech at the time - LOL).

I'm not an expert in assembly line robots by any measure - but the placement and alignment of some of the spot-welds don't exactly scream "robotic precision" to me.

That's called "close enough".

Seems the body panel engineering here is a bit better than the Cybertruck where some of the body trim panels de-glue from the chassis and fly off at 60 MPH.

Or the Ford Bronco body flares that fly off at high speeds.

It's new for me too, haha. I only know a little because we were seeing if they would be useful for our work. I've mostly worked in smaller shops with equipment that's the same age as me.

I assume there will be a top coat over the e-coat?

E-coat guy here. Since the chassis is protected from the sun by the body panels a top coat is not necessary. The e-coat provides all the corrosion protection the frame needs. Top coats are for UV protection or aesthetics when dealing with a cathodic epoxy system, which is industry standard on vehicles.

If thats's the frame on display in the CA studio, theres a good chance it's the same prototype frame seen in the first Munro video from a year ago. It may be dramatically different from the production frame in the details.
