Only pointing out there’s no real time communication like with every other vehicle integrated phone app.
Maybe it's a trauma response from GM selling my data, but I consider this a feature not a bug.

i definitely dont want more integration or infotainment. The slate is stripped down I love it.

I dont need to see anything from the car on my phone.

My tundra doesnt have infotainment and I just do maps on my phone. As I upgrade my phone, my "infotainment" gets upgraded.

It may sound petty, but I’d rather not have to take my phone out of my pocket and back in every time I get in and out of my car to listen to music or use GPS. So I’d like to be able to install an aftermarket screen. If I have to use my phone, I’m hoping at least the app will turn into a pseudo-CarPlay or android auto screen. Just to make a more driver friendly user interface. If not, there’s an app called car dashboard that I’ve been meaning to try.

'Car Dashboard' - looks interesting. What functionality would that app provide for the Slate? Or any car for that matter. Because I'm guessing that the features it advertises - maps, playlists - are already available on the mobile device without the app.
It wouldn’t be to add function to the slate itself, it would just turn your phone into a more easily manageable display and user interface while driving. Like Apple CarPlay and android audio does.

The idea is things like carplay change up the interface, big, easy to see at a glance icons, where a phone maybe fits 8 of them, so it's less of an issue using it while driving, and limited app availability, no games etc while in driving mode. I'm assuming the Slate app will do this. Just like android auto/carplay, let you use the nav app of your choice(with charging stations), play music, maybe you hear your text messages, and take calls on speakerphone.

From the Q & A video:

Q: It's 13 degrees Fahrenheit today. How will that impact outdoor charging and driving distance?

A: All vehicles do have some degradation in performance in cold weather and for flight. What we're doing is we're going to offer a sweet app that will provide you information on where the nearest charging station is, should you need it.

This is what I'm expecting, including a feature to help you locate nearby charging stations.
Went to site, hoping to see something inspiring, apparently you may get to see but only after you pay, not even a good description what to expect. Need to delete the app. ☹

Interesting points here.

I wonder how that would go over? I'm not sure that restricting access to one's phone/mobile would be a big hit. I mean, I understand the liability here. But still... 🤔

Are you referring to the app I shared a link to?

He’s describing exactly what CarPlay and android auto already do.
