A Slate-specific Bike Holder for the tailgate that's stowable in the frunk would be a useful accessory for Slate to offer.

Sure you could use a moving blanket and ratchet straps, or even go commando and score some tailgate Shark Scars, but a Slate-specific holder wild be better.

I use a bed extender with foam on the top rail. Drop the tailgate, flip the bed extender open and hang the bikes on the tube.

Depending on how the spare tire mount is set up, those with that accessory might be able to take advantage of this kind of mount. I have one on my Geo and it gets the job done.

What's the benefit to this, as opposed to the hundreds of aftermarket options available? Dakine, Fox, Yakima, etc all make one, as well as endless amazon knock offs

The main benefit I was thing of is perfect fit, both on the tailgate and in the frunk.

If a special backing material would be better for the Slate's finish, then that too.

I think you’re overthinking this one…

As long as there's a hitch mount, I can use my Kuat bike rack and I'll be happy.

I thought that's what the Basecamp 3.0 is? Am I mistaken

Yes, although last year when I posted that I was suggesting a bespoke one for the Slate. Apparently having it be a custom fit isn't necessary.

Apparently you pay quite a premium by using the maker instead of buying it directly.

Looks like the Slate Maker price is the same as regular price there. That is a presale 20% off deal for an item that ships at the end of the month. If you were to wait until it is available you would pay full price.
