Had a maverick hybrid. Sold to buy Slate
Is the boston Globe one worth paying a buck to get through the paywall?

I read the Boston Globe article (thank you, Jacksonville Public Library!), it notes a few things we knew already:

  • It took the author longer to roll down the window with seven cranks that it did to "get up to speed on a fast two-lane back road" in Newport, whatever that means.
  • The ride is described as "smooth, even over some bumpy Rhode Island beach roads, but not exactly nimble or sporty". I remember reading somewhere else that the Slate folks implied that the suspension will be tuned before deliveries start (maybe I hallucinated it?), but I can't track down the source now.
  • The side mirrors are manually adjustable.
  • "fairly aggressive" regen breaking on the one-pedal driving. Tracks with other reviewers calling it "Tesla-style" (again, no source here, I remember hearing it in some YouTube video from a year ago)
  • No updates on the preorder numbers, still the same "10,000 people put down nonrefundable deposits of $250 to $300 in the first two hours" number we've seen before.
  • Apparently Slate says that the trucks will ship "with nicer interior materials", I guess that's nice. Not too nice though, because "It won’t ever be confused with luxury electric pickups from Rivian or Tesla."

Several of the reviews mentioned the truck they drove had the audio speakers in it but no one mentioned if they actually listened to the system and how it sounds. Ugh!

If the speakers were just mockup parts, then the reviewers should have said so. Car and Driver said the speakers were in the truck for "demonstration purposes". Well, that's clear (LOL); demonstration of what they look like or demonstration what they sound like?

Journalism sucks nowadays. LOL.

While additional fine-tuning is likely, it's good to maintain realistic expectations. On a truck this size, at this price point, with a 1550 lb payload capacity there's only so much you can do. The DV prototypes are likely highly representative of how the production truck is going to drive. Spring rates and suspension geometry are unlikely to change at this point, so about the only thing left to tweak is shock valving. Simulations should have gotten them pretty close to the right answer, so any remaining tuning will likely result in very subtle changes.

One of the reviews mentioned the headliner matching Hollywood’s merkin. Besides me, how many folks googled “merkin”?
I already had concerns about the headliner BEFORE that review. 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks to this forum, I can never unsee the Wikipedia for that word. You'd think Wikipedia would be safe.
