I would absolutely choose the standard Slate with 150mi.

But I don't think there's anything wrong with people wanting to get more range than they strictly "need". It's not necessarily because of anxiety. It's just like how you might be willing to spend more for a phone or computer with a longer battery life, even if you don't need it.

My buddy has a Model 3 that he drives 160 or so miles, each way, to work. He charges to about 90% every day and runs it down to about 10% (give or take a few percent here and there).

I stayed with him for 2 weeks back in February. We took his car everywhere we went, since I was driving my pickup that was my tow vehicle as well.

He has developed the habit of plugging his car in EVERY TIME he gets home. He DOES have solar so he's never worried about off-peak charging, but we NEVER once worried about the range. Even if he got home, got changed, showered, and then we went to dinner he still had plenty of charge. We would make range anxiety jokes about how it took him 1% just to get out of his neighborhood and that meant we wouldn't even make it to the main road.

I look at the standard range of the Slate to honestly be about 45 miles, out-and-back. That's from 80%-20%, which isn't great. But the longest drive I regularly do is about 33 miles. Which is PLENTY for me.

My pickup is good for 700 miles on its best day.

I have no anxiety about the Slate.

EDIT:

To add to my rambling, I used to tow a 6x12 cargo trailer with motorcycles in it across the country with a 2019 Ford Ranger. It made several trips to California from Indiana. I would get 10mpg and had an 18 gallon tank. At 140 miles I was ITCHING for a fuel station. More than once I had to dip into the 93 octane for the bikes that was in the trailer.

THAT is my anxiety. I wont be recreating that trip with the Slate.

I am still tempted to buy a VW eGolf now that you can pick them up for $9000. For a Grocery Getter or light work commute no anxiety there. :) I think new their range is around the same as the Slate non-extended range.

After owning several VWs I said never again. Most troublesome vehicles I ever owned…

I have a Subaru Crosstrek that averages a 29 mpg and a Toyota Camry hybrid that get 50 mpg, on longer trips not involving snow we drive the Camr as I get 500+ miles on the tank.

That being said if I chose to drive the Slate for 90% of the drives it would be fine, mostly it would probably just sit during the weekdays as I’m retired.

Only one place I would be reluctant to take it is to enroll his house as they live in an isolated area of the state. It is reluctant to take it is to enroll his house as they live in an isolated area of the state. It is a recreational area and I do see Tesla’s going up there when we do go to visit, but I still have not seen any charger that wasn’t at one of the casinos, so that’s the only place that would really be a concern for me

As far as every day driving, I think it’d be perfectly fine with today’s 150 mile range

I hope Slate will let you take delivery of your truck at the factory in Warsaw. I will do so, if the delivery charge is less or it is waived. I have never been the midwest and it would be quite an adventure driving to my home in the state of Washington. Will I have range anxiety? Yes !

A 3 day adventure with 25 stops to charge and 14 hours of charging for a Nor Cal return.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing, with the same concerns (NW Montana). I could picture myself stopping every 20 miles to charge, but what a great trip/story it could be. 😂 ND would be a bear though...

100% agree. Ever since diesel gate, the corporate decisions and cars and tech they produced have been garbage. We had a TAOS for 1 yr and in that yr the Brakes were gone in 6K miles, Headgasket blown by 10K, DSG needed reprogramming a few times, and the Infotainment stopped working everytime we put gas it it. Bizzare.

However, I still drive a 24yr old TDi Golf that runs like new though. And impulse purchased the Last all/mostly Analog GTI with EA888.3 engine. Analog in this case = Cable Pull HAND/E-Brake, KEY in the ignition, Analog Gauge Cluster with Needles, NO NAV but oddly Wired Apple Car Play. End-of-an-Era with the ability to use my phone for everything else (sort of like SLATE). :) -- I have a search setup for a vintage Scirocco and Corrado VR6 though.

I never really gave VW much thought growing up until my first tour in Germany (1987-1991) when VWs would RIP past me on the autobahn at easily 120mph+ (I think Golfs and the like, not the beetles). Was a real eye-opener, those things can scoot! American versions may be different but damn!

Honestly, owning a motorcycle that gets 120 miles per tank made me feel much better about 150 mile range EV.

Especially an EV that'll be a secondary vehicle meant for groceries and hardware store trips, that I can charge from home.
That's true... My Harley doesn't have a gas gage and I have to go by my trip meter. I get around 90 miles before I need to be filling up. Used reserve quite a few times. Probably conditioned me well to not having range anxiety.

Download A Better Route Planner (ABRP) for your phone and see what it says for EV charging in the trip route. You’re going to want this app when you get your truck so go ahead checkout how things look around your expected travel routes.

Sorry to be a downer , but the delivery charge (if charged for any vehicle) must be charged for all vehicles. It’s one of the really smartest regulatory requirements ever conceived. 🙁
