Dash Cam install in your Slate, YEA or NAY?

I thought this would be an interesting topic of discussion. What are your thoughts on a dash cam for the SLATE?

I for one will be getting one because more and more people in Central Ohio seem to suck at driving (distracted driving, not moving when the light turns green, turning right on red and cutting people off who are traveling straight through an intersection, running red lights due to impatience, speeding through roundabouts without yielding, exceeding the speed limit by 20+ MPH and/or weaving in and out of heavy interstate traffic, etc.) I found this dash cam on several top 5 lists. It sells on Amazon for $399.

Does anyone have any experience with dash cams? Care to share you thoughts?

If you’re going to use it while parked opt for one of the many auxiliary battery packs available for dash cams.

Dash cams are great. If I am ever in an accident, I want to have it on video.

There are a lot of bad drivers, no doubt, but there are a lot more good drivers.

Today, I drove into down town Dallas. About 20 miles one way on severely congested and under construction highways and city streets. Guess how many accidents/near accidents I saw during the 90 minute round trip: Zero.

I understand the want for a dashcam but I think most of it is based upon unfounded fear...considering the number of drivers and miles.

Can this also do autonomous driving? I remember watching something like this on Out of Spec with an older Rivian R1T or R1S. Not that I’m interested. I’m leasing a Tesla Model 3, I’ve been given two free trials of FSD, and I’ve never subscribed. I just want cruise control, so I can rest my legs on longer trips.

Good to know. I work at a school and the kids can’t park for $#!+. Although the polypropylene door panels have a nice side effect of being dent resistant.

It’s not so much fear as useful to the police and insurance for assigning blame. You can also help fellow drivers out if you witness an accident by sharing the footage with them.

Yes. I have a front facing dashcam that also has an in-cabin back view. Last year was rear ended and the adverse party adjuster was giving me static. I finally offered up my video of my head snapping back and hitting the headrest. She finally relented and paid my medical bill plus $250. Now you may say I could have made a million bucks as the redditors all claim. No. This was a very minor accident. It was enough for me to see the doctor just to be sure. I was assured I was OK, they paid that bill, and $250 for me to close the claim. No, I didn't need $100k. That's not me. It was all fair -- but without the dashcam, I'm not sure it would have happened.

I have a front and rear motorcycle dashcam now and I'll get another one for the Slate. It's just a small black box with wires going to front and rear cameras that can be mounted anywhere. There's no screen to be a distraction and nothing stuck on the windshield.

I use a WolfBox here, they replace the rear-view mirror entirely which is super convenient for mounting and you really notice how nice it is having your cargo and passengers not able to get in the way of your rear view AND not being able to be blinded by headlights behind you since the automatic-gain-control compensates quite well for it.

That’s nice. I’ve seen a few digital rearview mirrors online, but some folks say it’s hard to judge distance. You can’t beat the wide angle though.

Correct. I’d say that FSD is still superior. But Comma beats BlueCruise & SuperCruise.
