I noticed the B-pillar is particularly chunky and the traditional looking over the shoulder technique might not work too well.
Is there a blind-spot detector and light on the side mirrors to mitigate the problem?

There is an alternate way -- some say the correct way -- to set your side view mirrors to show the blind spot. Then you use your rear view mirror to see behind you.

I have my mirrors like this. Very few people do. They use the side views to look behind them and hence don't cover the blind spot. All three mirrors do one thing and leave the two blind spots blind.

One problem with a pickup is if you have crap in the bed, or the tonneau up, you need the side views to see behind. My plan is to have the left side view cover the blind spot and the right passenger cover the behind. The right side blind spot then needs a shoulder check. After all, many of us grew up without a passenger side mirror because the idea was you give it the over-the-shoulder glance.

BTW: my Honda has a blind spot warning. I find it completely insufficient. The warning angle is too small and tight to the vehicle.

I think that's a big miss on SLATE's part. Tha's one of the primary reasons I'm skipping the first release. I'll consider the SLATE again if they up their game on safety and convivence. The lack of power mirrors, power windows, and blind-spot monitoring is just stupid as they're proven tech and as proven by other manufacturers, low cost enough to add as basic features in even the lowest cost models.

I still have the SLATE on my radar, but not this 1st gen.

My general rule is, if you can see the side of your car in the side mirror - they're set wrong.

Back in my day there were no blind spot indicators! :CWL::CWL::CWL::CWL:
Yup, same here - boomer cars from 1960's thru 1980's:

Came from manual windows, manual side mirrors, no A/C, manual steering, manual brakes, 3 speed manual trannys now called 3PD.

When I learned to drive, it was always: mirrors, signal intentions, look over your shoulder, then move over.

These days, people are just spoiled....

I depended on blind spot warning too much. Once I changed lanes, nothing from the monitor and there was a car filling up my rear-view mirror. It must have been right at that critical point. Now I look back, I just don't totally trust the BSW anymore.

My experience too. Probably a good reason I can turn my off.

Wow, this is a tough one, $6.98 for stick on convex mirrors , or raise the price $1000.00 so you can have radar in the tail light assemblies. I have been driving for 50 years and never had had blind spot warning devices. I guess that's why I like this truck, it has what I need, without all the bs I don't want to buy into. If I keep it pegged at 90mph all the time, there won't be that many people sneaking into my blind spot anyway.

This is the way!
I have mine set so as someone passes me the move from the rearview>side mirror>my peripheral view. I can't stand seeing the same car twice in different mirrors.
When I have stuff in the back I can lean enough to get the side mirrors to show behind me, or I'll adjust them some like you mentioned.

Our Mazda CX90 has surprisingly bad blind spots but that's because they put an inline 6 in a 3row SUV, but drives amazingly for such a big SUV.
