I missed some additional fees for registering a new vehicle, like titling fees, new plate fees, and new registration fees. So I have to revise my $585 estimate up slightly for the Seattle WA area. I'm haven't figured out the new number, but I suspect they will add another $100 to $200 to the first year registration.

My 2004 Tacoma registration costs about $105 a year. Owning old cars is pretty cheap under our progressive tax structure. I cannot blame Slate for the high cost of tabs for a new car, they have no control over state taxes. Any other new EV would punish me as bad or worse (mostly worse since most new EVs cost more). I guess it's part of the price to have an income tax free state with reasonable property taxes.

Well, now I can pretty closely calculate my price for a 2027 Slate in the Seattle area.

$24,950 base price
$519.93 accessories
$1450 destination fee
$2961.19 sales taxes (11%)
$585 approximate first year registration (including $225 for EVs)
$30,466.12 estimated total price

Slate has nothing to do with $3546 of that total and I would get hit with a similar number (usually greater) on any other new vehicle purchase. I think it's pretty cool to get a new pickup for less than $27,000. My Tacoma cost me about $13,500 and about $15,000 out the door back in 2004 (single cab base model 5-speed). Considering the Consumer Price Index was 186.2 back then, over 330 now and will continue to climb, it seems like a good deal for a basic truck. And then, once I get the Slate, I can sell my 2004 Taco to bring my total cost down some.

In GA, the numbnuts charge 238 every year and just went up in July. I only plan to drive mine around 6000 miles a year so they are going to give me the screw over.

Everything you buy has taxes. Good to account for in affordability, but not a criticism, and that seems how it's presented. If you want less taxes on an affordable car, well. It's not Slate you'll need to complain to.

My state of Virginia is no big supporter of EV. No tax credits and a $131.88 "HUF" fee to make up for lost gas tax revenue. My taxes I calculate as around $1,300. I think $2,800 is much overstated for most states (California and NY excluded).

The state gets us with its personal property tax.

10 year warranty is mandated by California, Federal is 8 year. Most manufacturers just go with what's higher.

I have never seen/heard anyone complain about how the OTD of a Chevy Bolt is higher than the base price and etc. If the title of a YT clip says how the Slate truck is not really under $25K, I know I can skip it.

A large pizza is not just $30 as shown on the menu, it is around $40 when you add taxes, delivery charge, and tips. We all know that. 🤦

I'm afraid to run the numbers for NC, but I suppose I will soon. Like VA mentioned above, we have a fairly stiff yearly EV fee, and we pay personal property tax each year. I got used to getting taxed on old cars valued under $5k.
