GM has just announced that their next generation Bolt will start at $30k and the Equinox at $41k. I understand that these models don’t compete with the utility and versatility of the Slate truck but I think it’s worth noting how big auto is reacting.

Oh… did I mention that the Bolt gets 300 miles range on its LFP battery? That’s about twice the range on the Slate base battery.

Just another example of how Slate’s presence is already being felt. This is a big win for consumers!

The Bolt is a contender vs the Slate for me. I know it is not an apples to apples comparison.

I have a large capable truck and don’t need a truck. I need a third vehicle that is affordable and reliable. DIY maintenance and repair is a must. That and a trip to dealership to buy may negate a Bolt. The Slate with SUV kit will work for me with the need for occasional 3rd passenger use and will have cool factor but really only need a car. Will see 18 months from now.

I’ve really been eyeing the 2019-2022 Bolts. At current prices they’re honestly really compelling. Like you I already have a full size pickup, so that alone isn’t the factor that draws me to the Slate.
For $14K there are loads of Bolts in my area with sub 20k miles, most with brand new batteries from the recall. Like you said it’s not apples to apples, but assuming the Slate will cost about double that with the bigger battery, makes me pause.

you wont be able to find a bolt in the base configuration.

When dealers add $2K paint protection or $1K floormats that cant be removed...

While I am glad this is happening, it needs to, this is likely not due to slate. Ford and GM announced new affordable electric platforms about a year ago, rivian also did prior to slate.

It's market whiplash finally catching up. Apparently Ford's platform will be modular and will be a small hatch/crossover, small utility vehicle, and a dedicated taxi mix

The Bolt is a nice little EV commuter. However, I can't get past GM's baked in garbage like cellular modules, wifi radios, their custom infotainment trash, and other tech that will get outdated quickly.

They've actually said they plan on releasing an even cheaper sub model.

Like I mentioned elsewhere, i think the market whiplash is coming to an end and at least GM, Ford Tesla and others are kind of seeing what needs to be done. Stellantis and Toyota seem more than happy to keep pricing into oblivion
