Slate vs. Telo

Everything about Telo screams vaporware cashgrab. I don't see it hitting the market, just like Aptera. The founders of Telo seem like a bunch of con artists who won't truthfully expect to sell and make an EV. I foresee it going the way of Canoo.

I agree. Both Slate and Telo have been at it for three years. Slate has betas (plural) that look like finished vehicles…and accessories that also look like final products. Telo has one prototype that looks like it was put together in someone’s garage using fabric swatches that fell off a truck.

Not sure how they can given the cab design. That and the bed L-track are the only things I like about the Telo.

Add a hinge and then what? The front seats block it from rotating forward.

LOL, , didn’t notice where the Telo went. make it removable? rotate toward bed, slide up ? Or maybe make the whole mid gate removable without tools.

It is removable...and easier to remove than that Telo "monster" hatch cover with all the screws. But once you remove it, then what? It won't add any bed length.

I’m hoping with the no seat SUV/van option I can just leave in place to keep my dogs in back (Likely with some barrier to replace window)

I'm somewhat baffled by the Telo. Its expensive. It doesn't look like a truck...it looks like a clown car (even Jay is questioning why they are calling it a truck). It doesn't have a frunk...that tunnel storage looks fairly unusable to me, much less usable than what the R1T has. That front end just doesn't look safe. The rear suspension seems compromised. What they are doing with the battery density could be interesting, and I do like the use of L-track in the bed. But the whole thing feels (and looks) seriously bootstrapped...they built the prototype specifically for the PR opportunity of being featured on Jay Leno's Garage. I'm guessing that if this thing does make it to market, they might sell a few in Silicon Valley, but middle America is never going to buy it.

One more thing: Doug Demuro likes the Telo for its "quirks and features" and if that's not enough reason to pass on it, I don't know what is.

My thoughts exactly on Doug Demuro. That guy drives me nuts. Quirkiness only goes so far. It may establish a cult following but not a mass market.

Telo is one of the worst looking vehicles I’ve seen in decades, and I’ve seen what Hyundai and Kia have done during that time. The general shape and look is just off, and whoever designed the headlights should have been fired immediately. I get the appeal of a small vehicle that is also still capable, but in the US, I’m not sure that enough people really need something that small at that price point with the risks that comes with a new maker.

Slate, while it may be less aerodynamic, is mostly an around town car, not meant for long highway miles above 55 mph. I would still opt for the bigger battery for the occasional road trip, but we will typically use our Model Y for that. The price point (hopefully) and it’s customizability are I think the biggest selling points and I would put my money on it over the Telo.

Assuming that little vent hole is actually functional right behind the front wheels that thing is going to be full of rock chips and mud within a few months of ownership. I can already see it flinging rocks up and through it onto the doors.
