Why are folks comparing an ICE/Hybrid to a BEV?

Maybe I'm in the minority here but I do not get the comparison other than perhaps cost.

Comparing a Maverick Hybrid to BEV, to me, doesn't make sense.

BEV will have much less maintenance over its' lifetime. The hybrid has 2 drive systems to monitor and you still have things like oil changes and what not associated with ICE that will be ongoing.

I'm not trying to start an argument here. I've own a 2021 Mach E and have 103000 miles on it and the only thing I have spent money on is tires and cabin air filters. Still on the original brake pads.

I truly don't get the comparison other than price point

Agree 100%. I won't buy a Maverick because it isn't an EV. I won't buy any of the current EV pick-ups because they are too big.

I own a maverick hybrid and love it, but I put my deposit down on a slate day 2. I love the mileage on the mav and it is great value for the price, but it only has one advantage over ev to me, and that's the ability to drive 400 miles on the interstate at 77 mph, or 600 miles in town.

Other than that, I've always wanted to get rid of the 2200 moving parts of an ice drivetrain and go to 25 in an EV. I've spent far too much time in my life diagnosing/working on the Rube Goldberg machine that is a modern drivetrain.

the comparison makes sense. I need a car. I can spend X. Here are 3 options under X. Compare.

Does it tho? Apples to Oranges, IMHO

Some folks won't buy an EV no matter the cost, some folks won't buy an ICE for the same.

I guess if it makes sense to you, go for it.

Do you really drive 400 miles in one stretch without any stops? Most EV’s today will give a solid 240+mi run without charging. That’s plenty far enough for me between breaks.

I had two 2022 Mavericks and also said I would buy another one if they released an EV version. Still waiting.

Not currently. I had a 2019 Colorado extended cab 6 speed manual that I sold to Carvana in 2022 when they decided it was worth $8k more to them than I paid for it new. I ended up buying a 2022 Nissan Leaf with a 150 mile range and have been patiently waiting for a suitable EV truck to replace the Leaf. I have a 240v outlet in my garage so I can charge either the Nissan or the Tesla from empty to full between 11p and 7a when electricity costs 6.5¢ a kWh. Drive about 4 miles for a kWh and pay a little over a penny per mile. I've been living with a 150 mile range on the Leaf for almost 3.5 years. My reservation is for the 240 mile version of the Slate which is really plenty to do road trips with. With a 150 mile range it will be an impediment to take a long distance trip in. I don't agree that Slate is a joke.

Definitely apples to oranges. If evaluating purely on cost of ownership (not acquisition cost), the EV is going to be cheaper...perhaps much cheaper (fuel and maintenance). Acquisition cost between a new Maverick and the Slate are very close. Comparing on utility is more difficult. If you need a four door cab truck, the Maverick is better. If you can live with a two door truck the Slate might be better as the bed is larger and the vehicle is wider. If you need a stereo head unit built into your vehicle, the question is why? Same for power windows. If you like the idea of changing back and forth between truck and SUV, there is no comparison. Slapping a bed topper on the Maverick does not make it a SUV.

A lot of the folks that are EV resistant haven’t heard anything about one without heavy political bias. To be honest, this is the first offering that isn’t overwhelming from a tech perspective. For those of us that have lived with an EV- we already know that ICE and hybrid are only necessary for a small few.

For those of us that have lived with an EV- we already know that ICE and hybrid are only necessary for a small few.
My father in law decided he "wanted" an EV last year. I say wanted because they had a perfectly fine vehicle and only drive about 6000 miles per year. He's 82, and fairly tech save, MIL...not so much. So, I tried to talk them out of it because of the tech involved, phone app as key, charging schedule, all that stuff. I thought I had done it..............then he shows up with a brand new Equinox. I figured for sure I would be getting bombarded with calls about how to do this or that with it. Fortunately, he has been fine with, now as long as he keeps his wife out of the driver seat and app they should be fine. :rolleyes:

To your point, yes the tech can be overwhelming for some

Most people who conflate the price/cost of an EV with any variation of an ICE based vehicle do so because they have never owned or come to know an EV. They don't comprehend the reasoning that it's not apples to apples and often don't recognize or fully appreciate why EV's cost more.
