IANAL. The FTC has rules on this. It is legal if the company follows very specific guidelines. It has to be prominent. They have to follow thru with the promise, or you get a refund. And so on. Your credit card company will investigate your complaint and see if it is legal and within contract terms. Just asking for a chargeback is not automatic. Fair warning. That has to be illegal from a court or lawyer's perspective - especially for purchasing something sight unseen ?
Then I shall use a credit card that will stand behind me in a chargeback in case Slate won't allow me to transfer to a family member or friend, if I bail after the $300 and before the purchase.
