Goes live at 9:00 am Monday!

Jay Leno gets an exclusive first look at the Slate, a revolutionary new electric truck prototype built in Warsaw, Indiana. Designed by industry veterans from the early days of Tesla, Slate is on a mission to rebuild American manufacturing by offering a truly affordable, customizable EV for under $30,000.

With the average cost of a new car hitting $50,000, the Slate cuts that price in half through "Design for Manufacturing"—using a modular, single-vehicle assembly line where every truck comes off identical before being personalized by the owner.

In this episode, Jay, Tisha Johnson, and Jeremy Snyder discuss modular DIY Engineering, how the truck can transform from a standard pickup into an SUV or an open-air vehicle with flat-pack kits you can install yourself.

Well... Jay is going to drive it. So he'll give us something on ride, handling, acceleration, NVH, comfort, and ergonomics. We should hear the doors and frunk open and close, thereby giving us an idea how solid the truck is.

And some viewers will learn how to open a manual window.

I just hope she doesn't act like she did during the recent Q&A, that was a huge red flag to me and if she tries that on Jay's channel it will go over like a load of bricks. This should be considered Slates first real debut and the tone set here will carry forward in a big way.

We do need to talk about this description:

Specifically: "Right to Repair: Why Slate is "open source," allowing customers to perform their own warranty repairs and use a network of 4,000 independent shops instead of high-priced dealers."

I don't ever remember seeing that we would be able to do our own warranty repairs before?

There's always 5 or so people who show up to say "just buy a Maverick", "needs a range extender", "it needs AWD and 6 doors to carry my average midwestern household of 8 children and two large dogs uphill both ways in the snow at a 60 degree angle", and, inexplicably, "the price keeps going up so it'll be $35k or more by release".

The $7500 federal incentive was part of "under $20k" from the start. The incentive went away and they switched to saying "mid-twenties", which is a less numeric version of <$27,500.

Notable from the description though, the "230-mile" figure contradicts Slate's current extended battery number on the specs sheet of 240 miles.

I suspect that Slate University will include a section of authorized "User" repairs and maintenance items, and certain simple, non-complex warranty repairs can be performed by the customer while under the warranty period. In some cases, perhaps more convenient if you don't live near an authorized independent shop.

Is that a screen shot of Jay trying to precondition the truck and his hands are about to catch fire?
Hasn't this poor man been through enough?

That would be me. The nearest repair partner is 50+ mi away.
