If the Slate doesn't materialize, I'm hoping the VW ID.2/ID.GTI comes to the US. Both the Slate and ID.2 would be perfect commuter cars for work; 12 miles each way, charging available at work.

I want to try EV. I like how modular this platform would be. If I was to pick right now, I would order a lowered blank slate and put a gloss carbon fiber wrap on it. I might add factory trifold tonneau if I felt it was of good quality. I like that this truck would fit in my garage next to my RSX, Slate is 2 inches longer. (My Maverick is too long and dont fit i my garage).

As a past VW owner (and two time GTI owner), I’m more than a little curious about this upcoming electric GTI.

ICE car
The Slate truck is the first new car that I've been truly enthusiastic about in a long time. Lets face it, new cars that are ICE or even hybrid just don't excite as they don't push technology further and they require the same old engine upkeep and oily mess we DIYers love to bathe in.

However, if Slate fails to deliver the car, what would you do? If Slate doesn't meet the target price range +/- 3000 USD, what would you do?

I'm sure everyone here has a condition tree like this. Mine stops hard at the price if Slate actually brings the truck to market. If the end result is not reasonably priced, I'll most likely continue driving my E53 X5 as I plan to restore the front and rear end by the end of this year giving another decade of suspension life.
Save up for Telo?

Well, AutoForecastSolutions, usually pretty good at insider information, says a new Ford Maverick in MY 2028. So I would either...

  • New R2T - supposedly arriving CY 2027 - depends on how big or small it is
  • Replace my 2022 Maverick with a new Maverick in CY 2028 - won't know till we see the price and specs
  • New Ford BEV truck in CY 2028 - leading candidate
  • A long shot, but maybe - a new Telo - because it's two feet shorter than a Slate!
  • The black swan. The small BEV truck that we don't know about that some major OEM drops on the market without warning.
  • A Kia EV3? If it actually arrives in the USA. They keep putting it off.
  • A Rivian R3X - just because
  • An electric anything that suddenly appears on the market and is just irresistable?
I'm kind of spoiled by having an admittedly larger-than-I'd-like Maverick in the driveway. It's comfortable, useful, reliable and very economical now that the initial depreciation is behind me.

But I do eventually want a BEV and a two door extended cab. The smaller the better (as in the Telo).

I am looking foward to watching all these discussions change (for better or worse, we don't know) as 2026 progresses. We'll be getting actual Slate pricing. Hopefully some solid information on the Repair Pal signups. Competitors, if there are any, will start showing their goods for our consideration.

I think this conversation will change dramatically come Q3 and Q4. But I wouldn't pretend to have a clue how it will change.
