20,000 dollars if it’s more than 20,000 I do not want it and I want my deposit back!!!!!!!!!
I'd be very surprised if it was less than $20k at this point. I strongly expect it to be at least $23k.

You should probably get your deposit back.

Considering it was never less than $20k, just who paid for it.

I'm a Boomer. I learned to drive without a backup camera and big screen TV on the dash. My Bronco has an 8" display in the center of the dash, but being a Boomer, I learned how to backup using the three traditional rear-view mirrors. To this day I still use the mirrors to backup and NEVER look at the backup camera image in the dash screen because my muscle memory is trained to look at the three traditional mirrors. The rearview image in the screen is down and not in my field of view inside the cabin.

My 2009 Hummer H3T has the backup camera screen in the inside rearview mirror. Perfect spot for it since I am looking in the rear-view mirror to back up. The purpose of the backup camera in the Hummer is mostly to aid in backing up to a trailer hitch. The system broke ages ago. I've not yet died nor killed anyone backing up, because... I'm a Boomer. LOL.

I can read paper maps too and not get lost!

I'm comfortable in saying almost all drivers on the road today learned to drive without a backup camera. Still, I REALLY like the backup camera. Just because I know how to back without it, doesn't mean I don't see it's value.

Related, I learned to back trailers on tractors, looking over my shoulder. I still struggle backing with mirrors and have to be very conscious and deliberate when I do it. It just doesn't come as natural to me as looking backwards. (Backup cameras don't help with backing trailers at all...)

My understanding is that most backup cameras are only on when the vehicle is in reverse, and they only provide viewing, not recording. I have mounted a wifi cam on the cargo cover in my hatch to point at the rear. It is constantly recording on the SD card. If I get hit from the rear and that driver runs, I will have a picture of the car (screenshot from the clip). Not always the license plate though, some cars don't wear their plates on the front. I try to move away from tailgaters, but not always right away. It is the same as mounting a dashcam on the hatch glass. I just had an extra wifi cam.

I like the 360 cams on motorcycles. I saw one sticking out from the top of an overlander-van in the back, thought that was very cool.

The truck will be simple, but there are many gadgets that I'd like to utilize. 🙂

I don't need one. I never look at it when it is on the screen in my Bronco. In fact, the Bronco has 7 recalls all related to the function of the backup camera. The original recall was related to a software problem where the rear camera view on the screen does not turn off once you shift out of reverse only when the transfercase is in low gear. The NHTSA recall wording is (paraphrasing) "the image may distract the driver and cause a crash". LOL.

If a rear-facing camera can provide a better image out of the rear of the vehicle than the windshield-mounted rearview mirror can (when backing up), how can the rearview image on the screen when driving forward be distracting to the driver and "cause a crash".

Stupidity abounds.

I was watching a video from InsideEV E70 where they were discussing the possible market types for the Slate pickup and am curious on why those of us who are members of this forum are interested in buying the Slate pickup.

For myself I drive a 2011 Kia Soul my wife drives a 2020 Hyundai Elantra I’m 76 and retired. Financially, we do OK but I don’t wanna go out and spend $50,000 on a pick up truck that won’t fit in my garage. I don’t need anything fancy.

I’d like the idea of an electric vehicle, I also want to a pickup that will fit in my garage, carry plywood, patio furniture, plants, potting soil and take me to SomeBurros for tacos and beer on Taco Tuesday (LandLubbers if I was still in Davie Florida) for that the Slate is almost perfect.

I would like to hear your thoughts.
Those reasons and to save some money commuting. Also, I like tinkering and the Slate may be great for that.

I also mount a wide angle rear view mirror over the original one. It helps me spot cars coming up fast from far away. It was initially a necessity because the oval mirror in the MINI was not showing much. Many of these after market rear view mirrors come with a blue tint to minimize glare from bright headlights behind you.

I believe most drivers are trained to focus on the front, side views, and glance occasionally in the rear.

I'm not sure why it would be distracting if it was running all the time but who knows.

We only have a cargo van and a pickup so when backing, I can't see directly behind the van at all. I can see directly out the back of the truck but nothing from 5ft (or so) down, due to the tailgate. So yes, most people can back only using mirrors, but the camera simply gives a much better field of view than mirrors alone.

I'm not anti camera, I just don't need one.

The distraction is probably from trying to figure out how to turn it off. Doesn't sound like it's a problem that happens all the time, but when it does and your nav or whatever is overridden by a rear camera view, and you try to fix it without pulling off the road first...

All of the many cameras on my Tesla record constantly. Also the car is not a "most" regarding when rear camera can be viewed. I can turn on rear camera at any time. My most common use is when pulling forward into a garage with a door to make sure I am far enough forward that the trunk swing can't contact the closed door. But I also use it in other circumstances.
