Not Slate, but EV related. I have a 2023 bolt ev. Right where the odometer it started to go black. I touched it and made it worse. Right now it is not getting bigger but I am worried it will get worse. There is about 75,000 miles, I can't tell miles without the odometer. What would cause this? How do I fix this? Would I be able to resale it like that? How much would it be to get it fixed? I need the car to last intil I can buy a Slate Automotive pickup. Please see attached picture. Thank you! Is there another way to read the miles? Thank you!

Can’t find a Bolt forum?
pretty sure you have a Bolt problem, not an EV problem

Op, to answer your question, I would guess/hope/assume GM has an application that talks to the Bolt OTA. Ford has FordPass, and I can see my mileage there. My wife's Volvo has a similar app. Most OEMs have such an app.

And also, I'd assume the Bolt center screen would show the mileage.

Screen's dieing. That's a round of dead pixels that will most likely grow over time, although slowly since the screen's not being directly man-handled.

You can still pull the milage I'm sure from a car connectivity app, or the OBD II diagnostic port as I'm sure the car logs that milage to the ECU for that display. Won't turn away some buyers but it would probably fail our state safety inspection as they couldn't 'read' the mileage visually.

The fact that the head cluster is available as a replacement/ spare part possibly means it’s been happening to other vehicles as well.

Would 2020 fit 2023?
I would not buy a used one for this, you will not be able to program it with the correct odometer reading, and it could be considered odometer fraud, which is a serious federal crime in the United States under 49 U.S.C. § 32703

You should be able to obtain a new display from the dealer that can program it with the correct odometer reading. Depending on your specific vehicle the MSRP for the part should be $500-$600. and the labor to replace and program it should be in the $300-$400 range.

You are looking at around $1,000 to repair that. based on my rough estimate.
you may be able to purchase it from a site like this and they may be able to program it for you, but i would contact them to see if they offer that. https://parts.chevypartspros.com/parts/gm-cluster-assembly-42787375

you should still be able to see the odometer reading by changing the center screen. You have around 5 choices and one of them shows mileage right in the center of the screen. You can use the cylinder scroller on the right side of the steering wheel (at least on the 2023 bolt euv which I havE).

Are you sure the odo value is held in the display? I would figure it resides in the vehicle ECU. The values would be transmitted to the display over CAN.

Here's what service information says, basically. No, and yes... The BBCM and Cluster both store the odometer and VIN data, but the BCM is the official record. If either the VIN or ODO do not match, the Cluster will not display the ODO reading. Therefore, I will stand by my recommendation to not purchase a used module for this specific vehicle.
