Love the Solstice, tried a couple times to buy one, never worked out yet.
There is a red 2006 with a Mallet conversion running around up here. He chose the LSX.
I thought the Saturn Sky was a bit better styled than the Solstice, but it is an individual taste of course. Both are really neat cars. Rare too.

  • My '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, or my '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo was "Laura" (the Laredo), but I can't remember if I forgot one or only started naming with the '04.
  • The 2012 VW Jetta Sportwagen was "Johannes Carl Fredrich Wagner"
  • 2019 Rav4 was "Bandit" (a la Bluey)
  • 2018 Carolla iM is "Banner" [Wife's car]
  • 1995 Jeep Wrangler Rio is "Leo the Rio," formally "Leopold von Ranke"
I don't name them instantly. I give it a few weeks/months for it to just feel right. So no clue what my Slate will be yet.

Why do it at all? Eh, someone said it earlier. It's like naming a boat, or how PanAm Clippers all had names.

Some earn a nickname, some don’t. If I say “take Vinny” they know to take the VinFast. “Shitbox” refers to the ION Redline. I’m feeling the SLATE’s nickname will likely be “stumpy”.
You got a VinFast?!?
I didn't know they started selling them.
How is it?

Also an ION Redline is a great little sleeper.

It certainly is a looker, and GM also sold it as an Opel and even a really rare Dawoo in Korea.
All together they still sold less than the Solstice though.

We've got a few Vinny's running around here. They always stand out. There's a dealer in Cary, NC.

But there's a HUGE problem. VinFast screwed over the state of NC. They got incentives and promised to build a factory for vehicles and batteries. 1700 acres worth centrally located in the state. Land scraped and some building started.

Well, we know what happened. Markets shifted, elections, OBB, etc. It came to a halt.

VinFast dragged their feet, and now the state of NC is suing them to get the land and money back. It is messy.

I suspect the local enthusiasm to buy this brand has waned quite a bit.

I worked at the Martin plant that built the China, Philippine, and Hawaii Clippers. Cool place. Built in "B" Building. The back of the building was one giant 150-foot wide garage door.
My father was in the Pacific in WWII. Somewhere I have a photo he took from on top of the wing of one of the Boeing 314s that was pressed into military service.

RE: the VinFast, there WAS a dealership about 5 miles from my house. It’s now a Service Department only. Apart from a failed 12-Volt, it has given us 30 months and 25,000 miles of issue-free, maintenance-free service. Lease ends on 1/31 which is why I only moved my SLATE delivery date request to February 2027. It was a $0 down, $250/mo, 10K miles/yr lease. It has great lane centering and ADAS and will get me >200 miles in the highway at 75+ mph. Charging curve/time is decent too. Downsides is it’s overall efficiency (averaging ~2.6 mi/kWh) and it has a very long “boot up” time of 2-3 minutes. Most folks’ problems with their VinFasts, I think, is that they throw them into gear before its software is booted. I plan on turning it in with 30,001 miles; getting every penny out of the lease. Option to buy at end of lease is $19.7K which is way over typical resale value.

The black Infiniti Coupe - black Mamba. "You taking the Mamba to work today? I need Buttercup to pick up some stuff from the depot." Also, it's a nice reminder back to one of our favorite films Kill Bill.

The Nissan Frontier 4x is called Princess "Buttercup." Just because it's the opposite of expectations. Also, it's a.nice reminder back to another favorite, "The Princess Bride."

Then there's the names of our cats, for another day I suppose.

We often name our cars, preferring short names so that it is faster to say them. "The Prius C" is four syllables! By the time I'm done saying it I've forgotten what I was going to say about it!

Our RAV4 was "big" because it was so huge! Way more car than we wanted, but at the time it was the only way to get AWD in a hybrid, which my wife insisted on for her winter commute.

My 500e is "blue" because it's blue. Her Leaf is "Leafy" because she thinks it's cute, and at least it's not longer than saying "the leaf".

Nope, things are for using, not loving. I enjoy things for what they allow me to do or experience, but I don't get emotionally attached to them. This includes my cars, motorcycles and bikes. Emotional attachment is reserved for people and pets: those that can actually experience love.

My wife and I named our Hondas but nothing else. I guess they were just so cute: the first Civic, the first Accord and the first CRX, back in the 70's. Spot, Bert and Max. One of my cats is named Spot, the orange-striped tabby.

My advice would be to never take advice from someone who names their vehicles, like sailors..
