Boom ! perfect illustration of a practical approach. Obviously you had a subpanel handy nearby, and I assume there was greater then 20a capacity there, ya?
Was the choice of 20a merely a budgetary/no need for more thing, or was there another actual constraint?
All of the above. She couldn't afford a level 2 charger ... didn't really need it as she's just driving back and forth to work or shopping 15 miles from home. Also - while there was room for a 20a 240v breaker in her panel, there was not room for another 60a! Plus I've got several spools of 10ga THHN that I bought for another project ... practical stuff like that.

Thanks, my wife bought me the Gas Pump replica for my Birthday last year. I customized it with the EV related stickers.
but now you open yourself up to all the nosy questions!
That corner of your house confuses me. Appears to be electical meter (thus service entry) next to the downspout.... but into a room with big windows? Surely not garage or laundry room... so you have power stubbed out thru that front wall from a breaker panel that's right there, do I have that right? What ampacity did you put out there?

dumb follow up - you say 10ga THHN, so why not 30a? Just because you had a 20a breaker on hand and not a 30a?

Because the charger that came with her car only has a molded NEMA 6-20 plug on it and we weren't buying another one.

The previous owner turned the Garage into a Den, the breaker box is just on the inside wall where the meter is. Very short run to get the power I needed. I put in the EVSE when I had my Bolt so it’s only a 40 Amp circuit direct wired. But I have never had any problem with it or having my car charged when I need it.

My first setup was only 16 amp for my Spark EV. Changed to the Chargepoint EVSE when I got my Bolt. When I got the Equinox EV I considered bumping it up, but I was happy with the charging speed and the cost to putting in a new breaker, larger conduit and wiring just didn’t seem necessary to gain a little charge speed.

A couple of notes on home charging that some may find useful.

First, it has been rumored that Slate has partnered with Treehouse for its EV charging equipment shown above. They already are partners to OEMs such as Rivian, Lexus, Toyota, Tesla, etc.
Treehouse - The smartest way to electrify®

Next, for those who want to be proactive on setting up a home charger before delivery, Capital One is offering a generous $150 credit if you use Treehouse to install the included Level 2 charger in your garage. *

* Note I am not endorsing Treehouse for home installation, just passing along some information that was sent to me from Capital One.
I got a quote from treehouse out of curiosity and it was way too much in my opinion.

They had me fill out a detailed questionnaire and add photos. The charger would’ve gone right next to my panel in the garage. I have unused circuits, but they said my panel was full and was charging me for a subpanel. On top of all that, we already have a level 2 charging station, which I told them in the questionnaire, and all I was asking for was a 240V outlet in case I wanted to plug in the charger that comes with the Slate. They ignored all of that and gave me a quote for a new charger.

If your panel is adjacent to the proposed charger location, here is what you should pay:

Divide item #1 in half. Delete items 2, 3, and 4. Allow about $25 for the standard 50-amp breaker, $25 for the NEMA 14-50 outlet, and like $50 for a length of 6 AWG copper wire. A fair price by a licensed electrician in this case is $750. That is what I paid.

SMH to all of this.
Taking a guess that Treehouse is really just a lead aggregator, taking a big cut and farming out to nearby electrical contractor du jour.
very unfortunate.

It depends on your length. I priced it out and for 1” EMT, 4x 6 awg conductors (240V plug needs 2 hot, neutral, and ground), 240V 50A GFCI, gangbox, and trim plate was $750 in mats. $2400 seems semi-reasonable. It just depends on where your panel is.

Not too far from Queens NY. 🙂
But my electrician is licensed only in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Ah, we just moved out of queens to Rockland in September. The local electrician is definitely not going to charge us that much.
