Pretty exciting. Not sure I trust Ford all that much, their comment about a " fully electric vehicle charging ecosystem designed in-house by Ford using our own software" does not inspire confidence, Ford software sucks and they can't keep the 12v charged on a lot of hybrid mavericks.

Still glad to see another EV option. If Slate doesn't deliver, I'll consider trading in my Mav for this Mev.

The fact that they are still hiding the actual body of the truck makes me think they aren't getting good reactions from truck owning focus groups on its looks. I think it'll probably be low and look more like a car with a tacked on bed similar to the Hyundai Santa Cruz. I'm thinking the bed might be only 4' long too.

I am impressed with the lfp batteries and 48v architecture though. Your thoughts?
Since it has a much higher efficiency. Aerodynamically (I forget the context of 50% better) It's probably not going to look like a standard pickup truck - just the worst possible design for wind. A big slab front, tall, with an open box, Giant knobby tires. Lots of stuff underneath to catch air. So likely people are going to hate it because it isn't what they're used to looking at. You look at the weird Aptera three-wheeler and Yeah it's weird and I'm not used to looking at it... But if it boosts sufficiency massively and gives you a good range at a good price... It also means it won't use as much electricity And be cheaper to run. But you're not going to change the haters on explaining that when they just don't think it like it doesn't look like "a truck". Of course the general market has to buy it and want to buy it for it to be successful. I'm kind of glad they held back the actual look of it until later So I don't have to hear all of that....

In some of Ford’s early sketchbook designs, here is what was leaked. As the design evolves, there will likely be further details, updates, and teaser design cues.

I'm still thinking back to this peak from last year, the nose looks more pointed in the wind tunnel silhouette now, so seems like they're still fiddling with the design as the August front looks more Maverick style. If it looks like a Santa Cruz I think it'll be a dud. But, they did go through this with the Bronco as well, they tried to be modern space future in the concept and everyone threw fruit, especially after what Chevy did to the Blazer, and then Ford adjusted and got it right. That they're still in prototype stage hopefully if everyone boos what's looking like a Santa Cruz they'll course correct.

Aerodynamics are unimportant at low speeds.

The Ford is sleeked out so it can achieve range at freeway speeds.

OTOH the Slate is a city truck that doesn't need to be shaped like a used bar of soap.

Tisha Johnson's small pickup design with a "timeless and familiar form" is looking better and better.

I can live with an aerodynamic truck if it has a purpose. And if the shape doesnt get in the way of function. For example I think diagonal bed rails hurt one of the key values of a truck which is adding racks and caps.

If they are adding diagonal rails for a functional reason I can live with it, but if they are just to have a look, Im not on board.

Same with a sloped hood. If it reduces drag them I will live with it.

Lots of designs look like shit initially but they grow on you. If form grows out of function that is fine. I can live with something I think is ugly if it functionally is amazing. But lots of times form has no function or gets in the way of function.

As an example a truck needs ground clearance. If they have hydraulic lift so you can raise the ground clearance when going on rough roads (or in town for visibility) but on the highway you can lower it for better aerodynamics, that would be ok with me.

But any long distance vehicle must have erev. Im not ok waiting for 30 minutes to charge and having to do so much route planning to go somewhere. I think most americans feel this way which is why pure BEV trucks are switching to EREV.

In other countries, for whatever reason, it isnt as big of a deal. Maybe it is cultural or maybe we are just more spread out.

That sucks for me. My 80-mile round-trip commute is about half freeway at 75mph. A few aerodynamic conceits would help me a lot.

I'd be interested to see what the total drag area is of the Slate and the new Ford. The Slate may have a higher Cd, but a smaller frontal area, leading to a lower CdA. The Slate is estimated here, but you can see how its smaller frontal area makes for a very efficient vehicle. The Slate and new Ford are estimated here, but it's interesting to see the advantages of a smaller size. The Slate still can't match the new Ford bar of soap, but it does square up with the R1T pretty well, no pun intended.

VehicleCd (Shape)Frontal Area (A)Total Drag Area (CdA)
Ford "UEV" Pickup~0.27 - 0.28*~28.5 sq ft~7.8 - 8.1 sq ft
Slate Truck~0.39~26.5 sq ft~10.3 sq ft
Rivian R1T0.30~33.5 sq ft~10.0 sq ft
Tesla Cybertruck0.335~34.8 sq ft~11.6 sq ft
F-150 Lightning0.44~37.5 sq ft~16.5 sq ft

I wish more manufacturers used total drag area instead of the drag coefficient, but nobody wants to penalize their vehicle for being big.

More slick-ass fancy internet video hype tying to convince me BEV is better than ICEV, "we're doing it a new way", "we looked at EVERYTHING differently". Blah, blah, blah.

Please NO RESERVATION crap. Just STFU get it done and call me when its ready.

I'm getting tired of all this. :CWL:

I think they'd be remiss to not have a tow hitch on it at all, as there are uses for a hitch beyond just pulling a big trailer (cooler mount, bike racks, motorcycle trailer). Just like Slate, it's not really designed for towing much, but there's value in having the hitch there.

No matter how great it is, I really don't want to ever deal with a dealership again, especially Ford. It'll take a LOT for me to switch from the Slate.

I did hear ford renewed the license or what ever it's called for the Ford Ranchero so maybe that's a naming come back
