Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

This announcement will be pounced on like a rabbit in the middle of a pack of hungry wolves. If it's the world's best ever April Fools joke, we'll know really soon.

BTW, the video link on the Donut Labs website has already been hacked to redirect to a video game commercial. Not promising. Also, they released zero technical details. Compare to QuantumScape and others who have published exhaustive test results and samples.

I ain't getting excited until Sandy Munro tears it apart and says "Hmmmph" in an approving manner.
Donutlab.com is up. Must have fixed it.

Something I've riffed on for years about the EV industry; it's really hart to be completely honest when you know exactly what your audience wants to hear.
True, it is somewhat dismaying how many of the EV news sites are just copy pasting Donut's press information as though it is fact. If you can just say anything and know that it will get repeated 1000 times without challenge, then what is the motivation to be truthful?

The real problem is the EV battery development companies. They have been promising the ultimate unobtainium solid state EV battery for nearly 20 years now. Some prospective buyers on the fence of adopting the EV keep waiting. And waiting. Oh yeah, and... waiting.

The two prevailing chemistries now in use are going to be what we are going to get for the foreseeable future because the cost to develop the minerals supply chain, build and tool the battery factories has not yet been amortized.

Agree 100%.

After 14 continuous years of NCM lithium batteries in Tesla cars, I don't see a huge change for the same money battery technology.

LFP is the "next step" affordable wise.

Slate won't adopt new battery chemistry/tech until the manufacturing ramps up and becomes affordable.

I'd be happy with a LFP battery chemistry so that I can charge to 100% every day....

This guy has an interesting take that agrees with you, and gives some background to the company that supports it.

I watched this video last night, becuase I, too, am skeptical.
The two problems I know of solid state batteries are expanding pouches, and materials. If they are really batteries, how did they overcome the expanding problem? If they aren't batteries, and are actually capacitors, how are they handling slow release of the energy instead of fast?

(the entire 3D printing concept seems like a farce; imagine the dangers of some kid's drone breaking, they pick it up and experience a shock)

That's my old man rant of the day.

And number three... unlike a battery, SoC is directly proportional to capacitor terminal voltage. If a fully charged capacitor is 500 Volts, half charge will be 250 Volts, quarter charge will be 125 Volts, etc.

A voltage range like that is asking a lot of the motor drive and motor. The system will either limit top speed as the battery discharges, or invoke field weakening which is less efficient. To much will overheat the motor - or even demagnitize it.
