Will the Slate’s 8 seconds to 60 mph be adequate for safe highway merging?

I think it will be fine! I drove a buddies small car back home for him, driving about 4 hours on interstates and did not have any issues. It WAS a small adjustment, but after merging once and passing another vehicle once, I wasn't really thinking about it anymore.

I am pretty sure the Slate will be the 2nd fastest car I've owned in my 40 years of driving. The Tesla M3 LR is the fastest at 5.1 seconds 0-60. I think it will be plenty quick for my needs.

Yeah, it’s bizarre that my fastest vehicle is also the one that weighs 6700#. Faster than prior “sports cars”, X5, etc. It is a seductive feeling to know that you can accelerate your way around any messes on the interstate at a whim. 100% SOC is 340 miles….but not > 60 MPH! So, there’s that handicap.

I agree with everyone that has posted - an 8 sec 0-60 mph time is complete safe for highway merging.

My anecdotal evidence is that, over the past 14 years, I have driven 220,000 miles in the Dallas area. 75% of that mileage was at highway speeds on on I-20, I-30, Hwy 360, 635, 75. The first 7 years (140,000 miles) were in a Nissan Leaf w/ a 9.5 sec 0 to 60 and the last 7 years (80,000 miles) have been in a Fiat 500e w/ a 8.2 sec 0 to 60

I, for one, am looking forward to the Slate performance upgrade! :CWL:

I really am looking forward to increased range, though.

dfw is one of the hardest cities to drive in. The way the road splits in 3 directions with only last minute instructions is absolutely bonkers.

And, God help you if you end up on a toll road by accident….was much easier when I lived there in early 1990’s.

My MachE gets 5.2 seconds 0-60. Being an EV with no gears it feels faster than listening a ICE motor fight thru the gears for a similar time. With the torque the real limiter is traction vs weight not power.

Now on the other hand I drive a Chevy Express van loaded to the gills with junk. That beast is lucky to get 0-60 in 12 seconds on a downhill with a tail wind.

If anything 8 seconds seems to be a low estimate to me. The lighter Slate and with RWD and decent power should do 6s IMO. I wonder if they nurfed it down for cost savings and what effect that has on long term robustness of the power train. Time will tell.

My worst offender is a little over 13 seconds for 0-60 and I haven't really had any problems getting on the highway. Passing on the other hand, the time it takes to go from 50-70, would be interesting to see. In my Geo and LTD that's a death wish.

I have a 2018 Chevy Sonic that does 0-60 in 8 seconds. And I've never thought I didn't have the acceleration to get out of any situation.
What I find interesting is the Sonic has a similar curb weight but only 140hp. Seems like the Slate should be faster. But that might be gearing.

My fastest Carr was a ‘74 LeMans with a Pontiac 400 in it and I don’t think it was as fast as they say the Slate will be off the blocks. I’m usually the fastest car on the highway around Seattle in my ‘08 Prius so maybe I just don’t understand how nuts people must be in other cities. 0-60 in 8 seems plenty fast to me.
