I think I will end up installing a NEMA 6-20 outlet since I don't know how much extra capacity the breaker box has.

Installed a 220 V 30 amp plug in my garage a couple years ago for a welder. I hope to use that for a level two charger but haven’t put the pieces together yet.
Welder outlet is intermittent.

EV charger is constant current draw.

Have an electrician check if 24A can be continuously safely charging.

For my use-case... I will be putting maybe 100 miles a month of the truck with the longest single trip being 30 miles round trip towing 600#. (Except for once per year I have to do 80 miles without the trailer.) At that rate, I'm pretty sure level one will be fine. I always know at least a couple of days in advance whether I'm going sailing that weekend, so I can just plug in then and I'll be all juiced up.

I'm a big fan of TC and gave this a watch last night. I really like that Grizzl-e charger he used. If I end up hard-wiring a charger in the back I'll definitely go with one of those that's just dip-switch controlled, which I didn't know you could even get one so simple.

This vid has me seriously thinking that a 30a/240v circuit hardwired might be enough. I like the simpler (no app) approach.

my power company will credit the cost of the charger but installation has to be done so whats that cost to run 220v from my panel, across my basement into the garage? if that costs $1,000 how long would it take to pay for itself

looks like about $3 per day IF it was charged from 20%-80% every time

if we charged just 4 days a week it would take 1.5 years aprox to pay for the install if it was $1,000 and on off-peak compared to regular power

so probably worth it to have it installed for off peak power for me

I exclusively charge my EV at the "super off peak" rate, after 10 pm and before 6 am. I always try to avoid peak hours of 3 pm to 7 pm from my local utility. Not many customers are aware they offer several rate plans to accommodate ev charging. All you have to do is ask.

Yep, no reason to complicate such a simple device. glad the video was informative!
There are very few people that actually need for a massive 50-60 amp EVSE. You would need to drive a very long way each day.

I personally only use the travel charger that came with my Volt with an extension/adapter cable to a 20a/240v outlet that I also use for my air compressor and it is more than enough to cover my daily commute of about 40 miles per day.
The car is programmed to finish charging at 5am so that it is off peak and always ready for me to go in the morning (if i dont forget to plug it in)

I could probably do level 1, but distance to the outlet and how much load that 1985 gfci circuit that starts at a bathroom, and is shared with another bathroom, the garage, and an outdoor outlet can take may be a concern. I'll have to get some estimates on getting a L2 installed, the panel is at the far end of the house from the garage and driveway, and may have to be upgraded. I think it's 80 amp, as I only see a pair of ganged 40 amp breakers at the top, and the last open breaker slots were taken up when solar was added a year and a half ago.
It looks like the power company offers up to a $4200 rebate on upgrading the panel to 200 watts, so I'll have to figure out what I'd be paying out of pocket for the whole install.
That is basically the only rebate/credit available in my area related to EV, unless I buy used or from a local dealer.

I redid my electric system just for the ability to run a lvl 2 charger but with the slate I may just stick to lvl 1. My planned commute with it is 40miles just 3x a week so the added expense of putting a bigger charger in probably isn't worth it. I plan on sticking with the base battery as well.

My work drive isn't too far, about 24 miles round trip. I think I'll stick with Level 1 charging at first just to see how that goes. I'm still undecided on the battery size, I guess it'll depend on how much more the bigger battery will cost.

I considered mounting mine outside, but I've been seeing some genius little mods that let you run the charging cord through a sealed hole in the wall. Might do that to keep the box out of the weather.
